There's something magical about family adventures - those moments when you spontaneously set out to discover a new place together. Recently, we decided to add a touch of excitement to our outings by creating a little game. I researched interesting places for us to visit, wrote each destination on a piece of paper, and placed them in a crochet basket. Our son was given the important task of pulling out one rolled piece of paper when the time came.
On a beautiful and sunny day, he randomly chose Promenade Park in Maldon, Essex, England. With excitement in the air, we quickly got ready, jumped into the car, and headed to our destination. We didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be a delightful adventure.
First Impressions
After parking the car and walking towards the park, we were pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see and do. Right next to the car park, we spotted a playfield where children were laughing and playing. As we strolled further, little takeaway shops caught our attention, offering everything from meals and drinks to ice cream - perfect for a sunny day.
What truly captivated us was the wonderful view by the river Chelmer, filled with sailboats and ships gently swaying on the water. It was a picturesque sight that immediately lifted our spirits. To the left of the car park, there’s a museum next to a children’s playground, making it a great spot for curious minds of all ages.
Exploring the Park
Eager to see more, we made our way toward the ships, discovering even more attractions along the way. One highlight was the chance to sail on a traditional Thames sailing barge. Whether you join others on a cruise or charter the entire barge for a private trip, it’s a unique experience for families and groups.
Another fascinating find was the Steam Tug Brent, a historic vessel built for the Admiralty in 1945. Although it arrived too late for wartime service, it played a vital role in maintaining the Thames as a navigable waterway. Today, you can see Brent up close from the public riverside path.
Activities Galore
Promenade Park offers endless activities for families. There’s the Maldon Splash Park, perfect for summer fun, and a Model Boating Lake where enthusiasts can launch and retrieve boats. The park also features a zoo, The Valley Play Area, a skatepark, and the Maldon Yacht Club. History lovers can admire the Statue of Byrhtnoth, a notable landmark. Promenade Park is also dog-friendly, so you can enjoy your day alongside your furry friends while exploring all the park has to offer.
A Tradition by the Water
Our visit wouldn’t be complete without indulging in our family tradition: fish and chips by the water. While I’m not usually a fan of fish, there’s something about enjoying it by the sea that makes it taste so much better. As we sat down to eat, I couldn’t resist pulling out my camera to capture the beautiful scenery. I took a bite and was instantly off, snapping photos of the sunset, because let’s be real - the sun wasn’t going to wait for me!

Capturing Memories Through Photography
As a photographer and designer, I always have my camera ready during family adventures. This trip was no exception. The stunning views, playful moments, and vibrant atmosphere at Promenade Park provided endless inspiration. I captured countless photos that will serve as beautiful reminders of this day. The hardest part is always choosing the best ones, as they all seem one of a kind.

A Day to Remember
Although we didn’t have enough time to explore everything, we were amazed by how much Promenade Park had to offer. Everyone agreed it was a fantastic choice, and we’re already planning a return visit to discover more.
The day ended with a breath taking sunset - a perfect conclusion to our little adventure. February days may still be short and a bit chilly, but as the saying goes, there’s no bad weather, only the wrong outfit. With warm clothes and big smiles, we made memories that will last a lifetime.
